Want to reduce errors? Have staffers act like pilots

New research shows how techniques that reduce medical errors can be cribbed from other safety-critical industries.

Veterans Health Administration hospitals that used “Medical Team Training” programs based on error reducing  techniques used by NASA and aviation companies fell 18% between 2006 and 2008. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The training program focuses heavily on use of checklists to review/confirm procedures, and frequent briefings/debriefings by teams in the OR.

At VHA hospitals that hadn’t used the new training program, death rates fell by only 7%.
