Death after discharge: Why healthy patients die following ED visits

When patients visit the emergency department with seemingly nonthreatening illnesses, hospital staff do what they can to prevent unnecessary admission to the hospital. However, some of these admissions may not be unnecessary after all, judging by patients’ outcomes once they’ve been discharged from the ED. 

Study: One-quarter of Medicare hospital admissions are preventable

In terms of overall healthcare expenditures, hospital care has the largest piece of the pie. However, according to a new preliminary study, 25% of all Medicare beneficiary hospital admissions are “potentially preventable.”
