Providers turning to health IT tools to meet ICD-10 deadline

Despite the recent extension, meeting the deadline to begin using new ICD-10 codes still promises to be a challenge for most healthcare organizations. One way providers plan to overcome the difficulty:

Using new software tools to help.

In response to the looming ICD-10 deadline, nearly half of healthcare providers plan to adopt computer-assisted coding (CAC) software within the next two years, according to a recent survey conducted by KLAS Research. That’s in addition to the 21% that already use CAC software.

One issue providers must deal with during the transition to the new coding system is lost productivity. ICD-10 contains five times as many codes as the current ICD-9 set, so organizations expect there to be a learning curve that will hurt coders’ productivity. Many believe that implementing software tools will help gain back some of that lost time.
