New guidelines for radiation safety

The American Society for Radiation Oncology issued a six-point plan for reducing errors related to the use of radiation.

The group, commonly known as Astro, started a review of procedures after a series of reports came out of patients being injured — some fatally — by machines malfunctioning or clinicians not following basic safety procedures.

The plan includes stronger accreditation requirements, more training for clinicians, and a program for device manufacturers to better share safety information.
