Need to conduct a security risk assessment? There’s an app for that

For healthcare organizations, an important step in staying secure and compliant with privacy regulations is knowing exactly what risks the organization’s data might face.

The North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance (NCHICA) and Oak Grove Technologies recently released an iOS application to help healthcare providers determine when their information is at risk.

The app, called the NCHICA Breach Reference Application, is a mobile version of the organization’s HITECH Act Breach Notification Risk Assessment Tool. IT professionals and other staff can use the app to help determine whether a breach occurred and determine the next steps the organization may need to take.

After a user inputs information about an incident, the app provides a “total risk score,” and walks the user through the appropriate next steps. For example, the app can help determine whether a further investigation is needed or if other parties must be notified.

The app is available for $1.99 from Apple’s App Store.
