Leapfrog announces 2012 top hospitals

There are many hospital executives who aren’t happy right now with The Leapfrog Group, because their hospitals got bad grades on Leapfrog’s “Hospital Safety Scores.” However, there are a lot of hospital executives who are thrilled to be on Leapfrog’s latest list: 2012 Top Hospitals.

The nonprofit quality improvement organization recently announced its annual list of Top Hospitals at its Annual Meeting. The designation of “Top Hospital” recognizes facilities that deliver the highest quality care by preventing medical errors, reducing mortality for high-risk procedures like heart bypass surgery, and reducing hospital readmissions for patients being treated for conditions like pneumonia and heart attack.

However this year, in addition to meeting Leapfrog’s quality and resource use standards, winning hospitals also had to earn an “A” from the company’s Hospital Safety Score. This year’s Top Hospital list includes a record 13 Top Rural Hospitals, 67 Top Urban Hospitals and 12 Top Children’s Hospitals.

Three critical focus areas

Leapfrog’s hospital survey  focuses on three critical areas of hospital care:

  • how patients fare
  • resources used to care for patients, and
  • management practices that promote safety and quality.

In each of the categories, hospitals are asked to report on nationally standardized measures so healthcare consumers can compare hospitals in their community and across the country.

“Leapfrog holds hospitals to a fixed set of defined and transparent standards that are extremely high, and only the hospitals that meet those standards earn the distinction. This year we raised the bar for achieving this award, and still we had a record number of hospitals which met the standards, including a record number of top rural hospitals,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in a news release.

And the Top Hospitals are …
