Is there really more $$ at independent practices?

A new survey says independently owned practices bring in nearly 50% more revenue per doctor than hospital-owned practices.

Those were the results of a survey presented at the recent Medical Group Management Association annual conference in New Orleans. The survey results indicate independent practices bring in about $780k per full-time physician vs. $448k for hospital-owned or integrated-delivery-system-owned.

But independent practices aren’t necessarily more lucrative. Because of differences in how costs and revenue are accounted for at hospitals, hospital-owned practices that appear to be just treading water financially may be bringing in more revenue than it appears at first glance.
