3 tips for hiring the best health IT employees

Employers in many areas have a glut of applicants to choose from when they’re filling jobs. But that may not be the case with healthcare IT employees.

More than 60% of healthcare organizations plan to increase the size of their IT staff over the next year, according to a recent survey from research firm Computer Economics.

That rate was far higher than any other IT group looked at in the study. Overall, the number of health IT positions is expected to increase by 3.6%, compared to flat growth for the other sectors.

With that level of competition for IT talent, it’s important that healthcare organizations find the best. Here are tips from experts on finding and hiring the best health IT employees:

  1. Consider folks with specific training in health IT – Many academic institutions, pushed in part by financial incentives from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, have begun offering programs to train IT pros to meet the specific needs of healthcare organizations.
  2. Use contractors properly – For example, implementation of a new software system might require some temporary IT help. Organizations can use contractors to get the work they need without adding as much to their overhead as hiring full-time employees.
  3. Pay attention to soft skills – Having experience working with electronic health record systems or other aspects of health IT is important, but so are other factors such communication skills, the ability to cooperate with doctors and administrators, and a desire to take on new challenges.
