4 health IT certifications that can advance your career

For IT pros looking to break into the rapidly growing field of healthcare, as well as health IT veterans looking for ways to move up the ranks, health IT certifications can offer a substantial career boost.

Here are four health IT certification programs that can help professionals with varying levels of experience in healthcare technology:

1. CompTIA Healthcare IT Technician

CompTIA is one of the more widely known and respected organizations that offer IT certifications, and last year they created a new certification specially for healthcare: CompTIA Health IT Technician. Candidates need just a basic knowledge of practice workflows and medical terminology, CompTIA says, and the certification program covers a wide range of areas, including regulatory requirements, IT and medical organization operations, and security.

2. Certified Healthcare CIO

Offered by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), the Certified Healthcare CIO Program is the first health IT certification aimed specifically at CIOs and other C-level executives in the healthcare industry. The group says the program is meant for health IT pros who have worked in the field for at least three years and want to advance their careers.

3. Health Information Technology Professional (HIT Pro)

Health IT pros with professional experience or who have already received training can take the free HIT Pro certification exam. The program was created by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. There are six different exams designed for different types of health IT jobs:

  1. Clinician/Practitioner Consultant
  2. Implementation Manager
  3. Implementation Support Specialist
  4. Practice Workflow & Information Management Redesign Specialist
  5. Technical/Software Support Staff, and
  6. Trainer.

4. Health IT Certification

A private company based in Salem, OR, Health IT Certification offers programs designed for specific areas of healthcare technology, including electronic health records (EHR), health information exchanges (HIE), operating rules administration (ORA) and general health IT. Unlike some of the other health IT certifications out there designed for IT pros wishing to break into healthcare, the company says its programs are designed for healthcare professionals without much IT experience.
