Don’t try this at home: DIY hernia surgery goes bad

From the Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time file: A 63-year-old Glendale, California man apparently got tired of waiting for the surgery to correct his protruding stomach hernia, so he went the DIY route. Last week, the man, whose name has not been released, used a butter knife to attempt to repair the hernia.

His wife, concerned that performing self-surgery on the patio might not be the best course of action, called the police. They found the man naked, with the knife handle sticking out of his stomach. While waiting for the paramedics to arrive,  the man removed the knife and replaced it with a cigarette, in what was perhaps an attempt to cauterize the “incision.”

The man is now hospitalized in stable condition, having received treatment for the self-surgery and a psychiatric review. He’s expected to get the hernia repaired — this time by a doctor — shortly.
