Bedbugs: The newest vector for MRSA

As if they weren’t creepy enough, bedbugs have now been discovered to harbor drug-resistant bacteria.

Bedbugs aren’t pleasant, but to date they haven’t been known to transmit disease. That might change in the wake of the discovery of a bedbug colony in a Vancouver hotel that was carrying antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria. Researchers were looking into the area after discovering a boom in MRSA cases in the neighborhood.

In fairness to the lowly bedbug, it’s not yet clear if patients picked up the bacteria from the bedbugs, or if the bedbugs were infected after taking a nibble from people staying in the room.

Researchers call the finding “intriguing” but noted that much more study is needed before any conclusions can be drawn.
