State governments plan 2012 health IT agenda

Health IT will be an important legislative issue in 2012, according to a recent announcement by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

The NCSL has announced a list of the most important issues to be discussed by policymakers in 2012. One of the twelve was health IT, including the implementation of health information exchanges (HIEs) and the adoption of certified electronic health records (EHRs).

The top health IT topics to be discussed include:

  1. Electronic health records – One priority is moving states to establish programs to encourage adoption of EHRs. By mid-2012, every state should have EHR incentive programs in place, the NCSL says.
  2. Health information exchanges – States are responsible for maintaining HIEs that allow providers to share patient data electronically. By late 2014 or early 2015, states will be required to begin building an HIE, according to the NCSL.
  3. Health benefit exchanges – By 2013, states must have a plan in place to establish an exchange, so that will be a priority in 2012 for states that haven’t already done so, the NCSL says.
