Same-day surgery centers offer a free side of sepsis

Same-day surgery centers provide more than just quick procedures — they can be a fast way to get an infection, too.

A new federal study found that during inspections, 67% of same-day centers had at least one infection control lapse. Fifty-seven of the centers were cited for deficiencies. Some of the most commonly cited violations were failure to wash hands, not wearing gloves and not cleaning blood glucose meters.

The inspectors visited 68 centers in three different states. The study didn’t include data on whether patients at the facilities were more likely to acquire an infection from the lapses.

The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
