Next club drug to turn up in ERs: Snake venom

Health care workers who’ve done a shift in the ER have seen how “creative” patients can be when it comes to getting high. But being deliberately bitten by poisonous snakes could become the hot new thing.

A recent article in the journal Substance Abuse, discussed a number of substance abusers who have provoked poisonous snakes into biting them because the venom creates hallucinatory states and induced lethargy not available through more “conventional” drugs like pot and ecstasy.

So far, only a handful of the snake venom users have been reported. No word on whether ERs near college campuses should start stocking antivenom just in case.
