Modern Healthcare releases list of top 50 physician executives

Now more than ever, thanks to healthcare reform, executives have to think outside the box to keep the healthcare industry moving forward. That’s why Modern Physician and its sister publication Modern Healthcare recognize the “50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Healthcare” each year.

Gov. KitzhaberThe recognition program, which is in its ninth year, had a name change. Formerly dubbed the “50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare,” the co-sponsors adapted the name to describe the skills needed to implement reform successfully.

Making the list was no easy feat, since the top 50 was compiled from more than 3,800 healthcare executives nominated by readers for their leadership prowess. From the list of nominees, Modern Physician and Modern Healthcare senior editors whittled the group down to 100, and asked their readers to vote. Their votes counted for 50% of the outcome and the editors’ votes count for the other 50%.

The honorees comprised 43 men and seven women in different areas of the healthcare industry including hospitals, associations and government agencies.

The top 10

Here’s the top 10 of Modern Healthcare’s list of the 50 most influential physician executives:

  1. Gov. John Kitzhaber (D-OR)
  2. John Noseworthy, President and CEO, Mayo Clinic
  3. Thomas Frieden, Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  4. Brent James, Chief Quality Officer of Intermountain Healthcare
  5. Peter Pronovost, Senior VP for Patient Safety and Quality, Johns Hopkins Medicine
  6. Gary Kaplan, Chairman and CEO, Virginia Mason Medical Center
  7. Mark Chassin, President, Joint Commission
  8. Eric Topol, Chief Academic Officer, Scripps Health
  9. Christine Cassel, incoming President and CEO of the National Quality Forum
  10. Patrick Conway, CMO of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Center for Clinical Standards and Quality

Often the top spot has gone to people who have been on the list in the past and this year is no different. Gov. Kitzhaber was No. 3 last year and moved up to take the No. 1 spot this year. It would seem that his efforts to reform Oregon’s Medicaid program, and his work with physician and legislators to advance tort reform had quite an influence on readers, reported Andis Robeznieks in Modern Healthcare.
