Missing OR equipment? Better check eBay

When things get tough, the tough — steal medical equipment and sell it on eBay? That’s what one nurse just admitted to.

Angela DeVarso, a nurse at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to one count of transporting stolen goods.

DeVarso admitted that she used her access to the hospital’s operating rooms to load up several bags of surgical blades, sterile sutures and staples, laparoscopes and even a surgical camera. She brought the goods — worth more than $300k — home and sold them on eBay to out-of-state buyers.

DeVarso is scheduled to be sentenced July 28. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250k. She’ll also have to make restitution to the hospital.
