Latest green trend saves hospitals cash

More hospitals are jumping on the recycling trend — but benefits to the environment aren’t necessarily the main reason why.

For years, the quest for easily sterilized equipment led hospitals and other health care facilities to use more disposable, one-time-use only supplies. Using them is often easier, but the added waste is expensive.

Now, with improved technology that can sterilize, refurbish and recalibrate more types of otherwise disposable equipment, more medical centers are turning away from disposable supplies and looking for ways to reuse and recycle whenever possible.

Hospitals get the intangible benefits of being more eco-friendly (and being able to market themselves as such). More importantly, recycling/reuse programs help hospitals and medical practices save on purchases of new equipment and supplies, as well as reduce costs for incineration or hauling trash to landfills.
