Top hospitals for women’s health: What can you learn?

Catering to women’s needs is essential for any hospital because they make the vast majority of healthcare decisions. Prioritizing women’s health and positive patient experiences can help your entire organization run more smoothly, and some major hospitals are leading the way.

In honor of National Women’s Health Week, the Women’s Choice Award recently released its 2018 America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience list promoting organizations that are particularly helpful for women searching for health care.

According to the Women’s Choice Award, 86% of women would travel at least 50 miles for a hospital rated best in patient experience. That positive patient experience includes timely appointments, easy access to health-related info and good communication with providers.

Those are all things your hospital should be prioritizing anyway, but the survey drives home the fact that if your facility isn’t meeting those needs, patients won’t be shy about going somewhere else.

Key women’s health qualities

The Women’s Choice Award list looked at a range of Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) data, as well as research on women’s preferences, and emphasized the importance of the following qualities measured by HCAHPS:

Conducting routine checks on these facets of your hospital allows you to better serve patients and ensure they’re taken care of while staying at your facility.

With your staff, emphasize the importance of speaking to patients in clear, easy-to-understand language. Since effective communication is a major factor in patients’ decisions about health care, staff members should explain themselves thoroughly and work to avoid complicated medical jargon.

It may sound simple, but creating and sustaining a patient-centered culture at your facility will improve patient satisfaction and care. We’re all here to help treat patients, and reminding your employees of your driving purpose can keep everyone focused on the ultimate goal – and keep patients safe.
