Feds to review CMS auditing programs

Chances are audits are going to be getting even tighter in the near future.

The Office of the Inspector General is about to begin reviewing Medicare and Medicaid auditing procedures. The process, expected to begin in 2010, will highlight the general effectiveness of CMS auditing, the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program, as well as the Medicaid Integrity Program (MIP).

The auditing review is outlined in the OIG’s 2010 Work Plan (PDF download).

What’s this mean for providers? More scrutiny, in general, in the short-term. In the long-term, potential changes in procedures and requirements — if OIG determines things have gotten too lax.

We’ll keep you posted.
