Biggest meaningful use obstacle: Waiting for vendors’ upgrades

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has begun recording information about why doctors’ offices enrolled in EHR incentive programs have failed to meet meaningful use requirements. The obstacle most commonly cited:

Long periods of waiting for EHR vendors to upgrade their technology and receive subsequent certifications.

Those vendor issues account for 34% of all reported barriers, the ONC reported in a February 7 meeting of the Health IT Policy Committee.

Other challenges commonly cited by doctors include:

  1. Changing workflows to incorporate EHRs and processes required for meaningful use, and
  2. Complying with specific meaningful use requirements, such as providing clinical summaries for patients and conducting security reviews.

Despite those challenges, 26% of the physicians who reported obstacles said they were still on track to achieve meaningful use.
