Baby circumcised despite parents’ wishes, refusal to give consent

Oopsie. A “misread” consent form led to a newborn being circumcised even though his parents had specifically refused to give consent for the procedure. Surprising absolutely no one, a lawsuit is in the works.

Lawyers representing the parents of the infant, Mario Viera, are filing suit against South Miami Hospital regarding the procedure, which was performed in August 2010. The parents claim that they told hospital staff several times that the child was not to be circumcised. Eight days after his birth, while still in intensive care, the baby was circumcised.

For it’s part, the hospital said it has reviewed and updated procedures to make sure a similar mistake isn’t repeated, and notes that the child suffered no medical complications from the procedure.
