10 specialties patients have the most questions about

When doctor-shopping, patients request far more info about certain specialties than others. Docs in those fields should ensure they make it easy for patients to find what they need.

The leading health service categories about which patients most frequently request information are:

  1. Family Medicine
  2. Obstetrics and Gynecology
  3. Internal Medicine
  4. Orthopedic Surgery
  5. Dermatology
  6. Pediatrics
  7. Cardiology
  8. Urology
  9. Diagnostic Radiology
  10. Medical Oncology

That finding comes from Avvo, a service that provides doctor rankings and other information for patients.

Two things jump out from the rankings: The on-going reliance of patients on their family doctor as the primary caregiver — even as the family medicine specialist shortage increases, and the need for doctors in all specialties — but especially these top 10 — to have adequate information available for patients who are choosing a new provider.

While patients often rely on referrals from their primary doctor to narrow down their choices, when choosing between two or three referred names, the online “brand” of a specific doctor or practice can certainly sway their choice.

A practice can use social media sites and its own web site, in addition to other resources, to ensure it’s got a sufficient online presence and that patients looking for information have what they need to make an informed decision.
